Tasting - Exem Bordeaux

I've officially been in this class, Geography of Wine, for the past 6 weeks. I haven't attempted a wine review until this point because I was unsure of my own skills as a wine drinker. So, as most people do, I educated myself prior to making my first attempt at really enjoying my wine instead of just drinking it. I watched all of the Wine IQ - Basics videos prior to my attempt and I learned a lot. (If you haven't watched the Wine IQ videos, I highly recommend them. You may learn something that you don't already know, and they are entertaining as well.) I learned the significance of the swirl and sniff, as well as the importance of decanting. I also learned that I was using the wrong bottle opener (and that I really need to get a new one!). Finally, I got my courage up and gave myself an excuse to try a new wine that I would normally never try.

I was a little ambitious and went to the the wine store, Broadway Wine Merchants. If you have not visited this location, in Oklahoma City, you are missing out. Their people were helpful and friendly, and politely guided me towards a wine for a beginner that would allow me to have an enjoyable experience by not straying to far away from my comfortable norm. Their suggestion was Exem Bordeaux, 2014.

Name: Exem Bordeaux
Variety: 70% Merlot - 30% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Bordeaux
Country: France
Year: 2014
Price: $14

Winery review: The wine is soft with a toasty spicy character. That balances with the ripe berry fruits that are just on the stalky side of smooth. Drink this wine, with its fruity 70% Merlot, now. — R.V. Published 2/1/2017

My review: Fruity and earthy. Blackberries, soil and flower smells with moderate thickness. It had a smooth texture, with moderate thickness. A nice balance of tannins, with low acidity. I did not taste/smell the spicy characteristics mentioned in the review. I enjoyed this wine immensely and would buy it again.

I paired this Bordeaux with food from Olive Garden, and the wine really brought out the different flavors of the food throughout the different courses. When paired with the salad, it emphasized the earthiness of the wine. And it also created a wonderful contrast with the sweetness of the dressing. It was not overpowering. When eating the main course, the wine accentuated the berry flavors and brought out the flowery violet smells. I thought it was a wonderful pairing with the beef and cheese tortellini. I would love to have this meal again!
